ইংরেজি বর্ণমালায় মোট Vowel আছে পাঁচটি (a, e, i, o, u) এবং Semi-vowels আছে ২টি (w, y). যেমনঃ The words 'yes' and 'well' start with semivowels.
In English alphabet, there are five (5) Vowels- a, e, i, o and u. And there are two (2) more letters- y and w, which are called Semi-Vowels. In the word "cry", y is considered as Semi-vowel. Alphabets which sounds like vowels (phonetically) but functions like consonants are called "Semi-vowels".
ইংরেজি বর্ণমালায় যে ৫টি বর্ণ (A, E, I, O, U) অন্য কোনো বর্ণের সাহায্য ছাড়াই নিজে উচ্চারিত হতে পারে এবং যাদের উচ্চারণের সময় ফুসফুস থেকে আসা বাতাস মুখগহ্বরের কোথাও বাধা পায় না, তাদের ভাওয়েল বা স্বরবর্ণ বলে । ভাওয়েল ইংরেজি শব্দের উচ্চারণে কেন্দ্র বা নিউক্লিয়াস হিসেবে কাজ করে।
